Trick to learn Periodic Table in Chemistry

Struggling with Chemistry for Exams? When it comes to Chemistry, the periodic table is fundamental and very important, which every student of science must know and remember very well. Because without knowing the elements, you are deprived of the foundation needed to learn the rest of Chemistry.

Here is how to make difficult chemistry concepts easier by associating elements with real-life objects, using flashcards and singing the element song. Add colourful chartsvisual aids, and daily quizzes to make learning fun and memorable.

These creative ways make Chemistry fun and help you remember the elements for exams. Perfect for students aiming to simplify difficult topics and ace their exams with confidence!

In this blog, we are presenting some little tricks and tips that will help you to a great extent in remembering all the elements.

Periodic Table Quick Facts (Mendeleev Periodic Table)

Dmitry Mendeleev, the Russian chemist, is considered the "father" of the Periodic Table. Often referred to as the Mendeleev Periodic Table, it includes vital information such as element namessymbolsatomic numbers, and atomic weights.

Key Features of the Periodic Table:

  • Vertical Columns (Groups): Elements in the same column are similar or share common properties.
  • Periods: Elements in a period share the same number of electron shells.
  • Metals: Located on the left side of the table.
  • Nonmetals: Found on the right side of the table.

The Periodic Table contains a total of 118 elements, out of which 90 elements are naturally occurring, and the rest are man-made.

What Are Acronyms and Acrostics?

Acronyms and acrostics are simple memory aids, also known as 'first letter mnemonics.'

  • Acronyms group words together, making them easier to remember (even if the words don't make sense).
  • Acrostics form sentences that give more meaning to the words they represent.

For example, "USA" is an acronym for the United States of America.

Now, let’s dive into some fun and easy-to-remember mnemonics in both Hindi and English for memorizing elements in each group or period of the periodic table.

Note: You don’t need to memorize synthetic elements (those with atomic numbers 104 to 118).

Detailed Periodic Table - Elements divided into Blocks

The elements in the periodic table are grouped into four main blocks based on the number of electrons in their outermost shell. These blocks are:

  • S-Block
  • P-Block
  • D-Block
  • F-Block

s-block Periodic Table Elements

If the periodic table were a city, the s-block would be a small neighborhood filled with similar houses and properties. The s-block is located to the far left and consists of two groups.

Group 1 is known as Alkali Metals. It includes Lithium (Li), Sodium (Na), Potassium (K), Rubidium (Ru), Caesium (Cs), and Francium (Fr).

To memorize this group, we use a sentence –

 HighlyNaive Kids Rub Cat’s Fur

 HaLiNa K Rb Csey Fryad

Group 2 is known as Alkaline Earth Metals. It includes Beryllium (Be), Magnesium (Mg), Calcium (Ca), Strontium (Sr), Barium (Br), and Radium (Ra).

p- block Periodic Table Elements

Come on a tour of the p-block, an area on the periodic table filled with an incredibly diverse group of elements. It includes elements from the six columns beginning with column 13 and ending with column 18.

Group 13 is known as Boron Group. It includes Boron (B), Aluminium (Al), Gallium (Ga), Indium (In), and Thallium (Tl).

Mnemonic of Group 13:

Noble gases, excluding Helium. Normally, they are all odorless and colorless gases with very low chemical reactivity

d-block Periodic Table Elements

Let’s take you to the tour of d-block elements. D-block elements occupy the space between the s-block and p-block in the periodic table.

It includes elements consist of element groups 3 to 12. Groups 3 to 11 are also known as transitional metals. Group 12 elements, which have its d subshell completely filled, are also known as post-transition elements.

Period 4 elements includes are Scandium (Sc), Titanium (Ti), Vanadium (V), Chromium (Cr), Manganese (Mn), Iron (Fe), Cobalt (Co), Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu) and Zinc (Zn).
